How does Vistamatt compare to imported matting agents on a like-for-like basis?
On a like-for-like basis, matting performance is set by particle structure, surface treatment and behaviour in your resin — not by the brand on the bag. Vistamatt grades are specified against the same published particle-size and structure parameters used by established imported lines, so a grade is chosen by matching those parameters to your system, then confirmed by screening in your own formulation.
Buyers often ask for "the equivalent of" a specific imported grade. The honest answer is that no two silica grades are identical, but they can be functionally matched. What matters for a clear comparison is: particle size (D50 and distribution), pore structure and surface treatment (treated vs untreated), because these drive gloss reduction, transparency and ease of dispersion. Vistamatt publishes these parameters per grade, so the comparison is made on data rather than on claims. Where an imported grade lists a D50 of a given D50, the matched Vistamatt grade is the Vista grade on a matched particle route (see the grade table) at a comparable particle route.
A like-for-like swap is validated when, at matched gloss in your own system, the two grades give comparable clarity and dispersion behaviour. Matched loading is not the test — matched gloss is. Pigmented systems tolerate wider substitution than clear systems.
What are the MOQ, lead time and sampling terms for a first order?
A first order typically starts with a sample and a screening plan rather than a full container. Samples are provided for qualification; the production MOQ is set per grade, and lead time depends on grade and destination. Exact figures are confirmed on enquiry so the terms match your system and shipping route.
Most projects begin as a qualified second source on a single product line, not a wholesale changeover — this lowers risk and produces the comparison data for a wider decision later. The typical path is: sample request → lab screening (usually two to four weeks) → pilot → first production order. Which matting grade suits a matte PU furniture topcoat?
For a matte PU furniture topcoat, grade choice is driven by target gloss, film build and whether the system is clear or pigmented. A treated grade on a finer particle route usually suits clear low-gloss PU where clarity and burnish resistance matter; the exact grade is matched to your gloss target and confirmed by screening.
PU furniture topcoats span a wide gloss range, and the right grade differs across that range. Key variables: target gloss (a deep matte needs more efficient gloss reduction than a satin), film build (thicker films need coarser or higher-structure grades to reach the same matte), and clarity requirement (clear systems are less tolerant of coarse particles). For a clear matte PU topcoat aiming at 10-30 GU at 60°, a starting candidate is Vista-660 (5.0-5.3 µm) for a water-based PU or Vista-171S (7.0-7.5 µm) for a solvent-borne PU, screened against a finer comparison grade.
The grade is right when it reaches the gloss target at your production film build without haze on a black panel and without a rough or "dry" tactile feel. Burnish resistance is checked by rubbing the cured film — a matte that polishes to a shine under handling needs a higher-structure route.
Why does my matte finish burnish or show fingerprints in use?
Burnishing and fingerprint marking on a matte finish usually mean the matting structure at the surface is being polished down by handling. It points to particle structure and dosage rather than to gloss level alone — a higher-structure grade or a small dosage adjustment typically restores rub resistance without changing the gloss target.
A matte surface scatters light through fine surface roughness created by the matting agent. When that micro-roughness is shallow or fragile, rubbing flattens it and the spot reads glossier — this is burnish. Fingerprints are the same mechanism from skin oils filling the texture. Causes, in order to check: dosage too low for the film build, a particle route that gives roughness but not durable structure, or insufficient film build over the matte layer. Moving to a higher-structure grade or lifting dosage within the working range (clear systems roughly 1-5% on total formulation, commonly 2-4%) usually fixes it.
Fixed when the cured film holds its gloss reading after a defined rub test and shows no localised shine at handling points. If gloss is on target but rub resistance is poor, change particle route before changing dosage.
Can you supply the documentation our regulatory team needs (TDS/SDS/COA)?
Yes. Each grade is supplied with a Technical Data Sheet, a Safety Data Sheet and a Certificate of Analysis on request, so your regulatory and QA teams can qualify the material. Documentation is provided per grade and per batch where a COA applies.
A supplier qualification usually stalls on missing paperwork more often than on the material itself. The standard document set is: TDS (technical parameters — particle size, structure, key properties), SDS (safety and handling, in your required format/ region), and COA (batch-specific analysis confirming the material meets spec). market-access documents are provided where applicable. TSCA / REACH status confirmed on enquiry per destination market.

Which grade suits a matte water-based wood coating?
For a water-based wood coating, grade choice hinges on redispersibility, ease of wetting and clarity in a waterborne binder. An untreated or specifically treated grade compatible with water-based chemistry is matched to your target gloss and film build, then confirmed by screening — a solvent-borne grade does not automatically transfer to water.
Waterborne systems behave differently from solventborne: wetting and dispersion are more sensitive, and some surface treatments designed for solvent systems underperform in water. The variables that matter are compatibility with the waterborne binder, redispersion after storage, and clarity at the target gloss. For a clear water-based topcoat at 10-30 GU at 60°, a starting candidate is Vista-660 (5.0-5.3 µm), screened against your control.

My gloss reading drifts between batches. What controls batch-to-batch consistency?
Batch-to-batch gloss drift usually comes from variation in dispersion, film build or application rather than from the matting agent alone. Fix the process variables first — consistent dispersion energy, film build and cure — then confirm the grade delivers repeatable gloss when those are held constant.
Gloss is an outcome of several inputs. Before suspecting the material, check: dispersion consistency (speed, time, temperature), film build uniformity, and cure conditions. A matting agent with a controlled particle-size distribution gives repeatable gloss only when the process around it is stable. Vistamatt controls particle-size distribution per batch and supplies a COA so incoming material can be checked against spec — meaning in-house process variables can be isolated from material variables.
Consistency is confirmed when, with process variables held constant, successive batches read within your gloss tolerance and each incoming lot matches its COA. If material matches COA but gloss still drifts, the variable is in the line, not the bag.
How is the material packaged and how should it be stored?
Matting silica is low-density and packaged to protect it from moisture and compaction. Store it dry, sealed and off the floor, away from temperature extremes. Correct storage preserves redispersion behaviour; poor storage is a common cause of hard-packing on the line.
Silica matting agents are high-surface-area, low-bulk-density powders, so packaging balances protection against handling volume. Standard pack: 10 kg per bag (kraft paper with PE liner), ~1 tonne per pallet. Storage principles: keep sealed against humidity, avoid stacking that compresses lower bags, and hold within a dry, cool, ventilated place out of direct light. Shelf life under correct storage is 12 months. Material that settles into a soft sediment that stirs back in is fine; hard-packing usually traces to moisture ingress or compression in storage.
Storage is adequate when opened material redisperses to a smooth dispersion with no hard lumps and meets its COA on use.
We currently use a European matting agent. How do we qualify Vistamatt as a second source?
Qualify a second source by introducing one matched grade on a single product line, not by switching the whole portfolio at once. Match the incumbent's particle and structure parameters to a Vistamatt grade, screen at matched gloss in your own system, and compare clarity, dispersion and durability against your current control.
Second-sourcing lowers supply risk and creates leverage, but it has to be done without disrupting production. The low-risk path: pick one product line, identify the incumbent grade's key parameters (D50, structure, treatment), match to a Vistamatt grade (matched on D50 and structure to the Vista grade for that application line), then run a side-by-side screening against your existing control. Keep every process variable identical so the only difference is the grade. The screening produces the comparison data your team needs before widening the decision.
Qualified when the matched grade reproduces target gloss, clarity and durability on that line within tolerance, and the documentation set (TDS/SDS/COA) is on file. Widen to other lines only after the first qualifies.
Adding matting agent made my coating feel rough or "dry". How do I keep the matte but smooth the feel?
A rough or dry hand usually means either too much matting agent for the film build, or a particle route too coarse for the feel you want. Reduce toward matched gloss with a finer or higher-structure grade, or lift film build slightly — you can keep the matte while recovering a smoother touch.
Tactile feel and gloss are related but not identical. A coarse particle at high loading drives gloss down but leaves a gritty surface; a finer or higher-structure grade can reach the same gloss with a smoother hand. Levers, in order: re-match at target gloss rather than high loading, try a finer particle route, or increase film build so the matte structure sits under a slightly thicker surface. Working ranges for clear systems are roughly 1-5% on total formulation, commonly 2-4%.

Which grade suits a low-gloss coil or industrial coating?
Coil and industrial coatings run at high film build and demanding cure, so grade choice favours efficient gloss reduction and robust structure over maximum clarity. A higher-structure grade matched to your gloss target and bake schedule is the usual starting point, confirmed by screening on your line.
Industrial and coil systems differ from wood/furniture: films are thicker, cure is faster and hotter, and clarity is often less critical than durability and consistent low gloss. That shifts grade selection toward efficient, high-structure routes that hold matte at high film build. For a coil topcoat at 10-30 GU at 60° with a PMT 210-250°C for 20-40 s bake, a starting candidate is Vista-171S (7.0-7.5 µm) or Vista-361C (6.2-6.5 µm).

Do you supply samples for evaluation, and what happens after the sample?
Yes — evaluation samples are provided for qualification, and each sample ships with a screening plan rather than just a grade code. After the sample, the path is lab screening, then pilot, then a first production order, with support at each step.
A sample on its own tells you little without a plan for using it. When you provide your resin system, target gloss and standard, application method and film build, and the problem you are solving, the sample arrives with a proposed starting dosage range and a screening plan tailored to that system. My clear coat looks fine wet but hazes as it dries or cures. What's happening?
Haze that appears on drying or cure, not in the wet film, usually points to the matting agent's particle route or to dispersion, not to dosage. As solvent leaves and the film consolidates, coarse or poorly dispersed particles scatter light. Move to a finer route and confirm dispersion quality.
A wet film hides scattering because the medium fills around the particles; as it dries, refractive-index differences and surface roughness emerge and can read as haze. Two common causes: a particle route too coarse for a clear system, or incomplete dispersion leaving agglomerates. Check dispersion first (grind gauge, no streaks), then, if clarity still fails at target gloss, move to a finer comparison grade. This is closely related to the "hazy at gloss target" case but specifically about the wet-to-dry transition.

Which grade suits a matte finish on dark or black substrates where bloom shows?
Dark and black substrates expose any whitening or bloom from a matting agent, so grade choice prioritises clarity and a particle route that stays transparent at the target gloss. A finer, well-dispersed grade screened on a black panel is the reliable route; coarse or under-dispersed grades read as white haze on dark.
Bloom — a whitish cast — is invisible on white but obvious on black, which is why dark leather and dark coatings are the strictest clarity test. The mechanism is light scatter from coarse particles or agglomerates. Selection favours a finer particle route and thorough dispersion; the grade must be screened specifically on a dark or black drawdown, not on white.
